Every part of your cover letter is measured in the calculation of who to see for the job. Each element of your cover letter can be a reason to bring you to the head of the line.

See below for a few great strategies that will make you the applicant to beat:

Tell the hiring manager who to hire.

To the extent that you can, take control of the hiring criteria for the job you want. The recruiting manager has already figured out what she wants in an interviewee and odds are, unless you're moving laterally, it ain't you.

One of your biggest priorities in your job hunt has to be resetting the hiring criteria for your recruiter. This is one of those things cover letter can do that a resume can't.

What resets hiring requirements?

Data and examples. Take this as an example. In your cover letter, you say, "Very regularly directors look for admins who have already worked in departments like theirs. And then they're sorry when they run into the same kinds of scheduling conflicts and lack of cooperation they had before..." Aggravate the problem, "When I worked at Account Master, we found that 19% of late deliveries were caused by an inability to coordinate work and meetings between staff in separate groups."

Then turn the line of reasoning to illustrate why you're so effective. "Coming from across the aisle, I know the reputation that accrues to people in your department and I can speak to it directly and help bring groups on board."

Express your benefits in numbers.

Numbers are 4.29 times as credible as generalities (see what I mean). You know execs run on numbers. So give them what they want. When you make assertions about what you can offer to exec, provide figures wherever possible, and make them as precise as estimates allow.

Precision suggests that you're thorough as well, which is something else they're looking for in an admin. And precise numbers are frequently more believable than rounded numbers. Get proof if you can. If not, go to trouble to calculate approximately from memory and do the math to figure out numerically what you've achieved. How much better is attendance at meetings? How much more efficiently does the office run? How much less frequently does the boss get overbooked on her calendar?

If you have to guess, use the best guesses you can and keep in mind how you assembled the numbers in case they ask. And end your numbers in 7. No one is sure why but it's the most persuasive number.
